Learn Drum Tuning

Master The Art Of Drum Tuning

The Drum Tuning System DVD is an all-in-one training pack for drummers that want to master the art of drum set tuning. Learn how to change drumheads for each type of drum individually, how to polish and clean your drums properly, snare drum tuning, bass drum tuning, tom tom tuning and much more! Learn a wide variety of advanced drum tuning techniques including muffling to tweak the sound of your drum set.

Drum Tuning Tips

1) Tune your drums by using a combination of the "criss-cross" technique for basic tuning and the "clockwise" method for fine tuning. A drum's "criss-cross" pattern is based on the number of tension lugs it has.

2) "Seat" new heads by tightening them above the desired pitch before fine-tuning. This stretches and helps position them properly on the drum's bearing edge.

3) Tune up. Loosen the head slightly below the desired tension and push down on it to relax it before tightening the head to achieve the final desired tension and pitch.

4) Tune in even increments. This will stretch the head evenly and allow it to vibrate at its maximum efficiency- producing the fullest and most dynamic tone.

5) Tune to the drum's "sweet spot". This is the point where each drum "sings", feels good and is the most resonant.

A bass drum is a relatively large drum that produces a note of low definite or indefinite pitch. The bass drums are of variable sizes and are used in several musical genres (see usage below). Three major types of bass drums can be distinguished: the large orchestral bass drum, the smaller 'kick' drum, and the pitched bass drums. The type usually seen or heard in orchestral, ensemble or concert band music is the orchestral, or concert bass drum (in Italian: gran cassa, gran tamburo). It is the largest drum of the orchestra. The 'kick' drum, struck with a beater attached to a pedal, is usually seen on drum kits. The third type, the pitched bass drum, is generally used in marching bands and drum corps. This particular type of drum is tuned to a specific pitch and is usually played in a set of three to five drums. The bass drum was imported from the Middle East.

In drumming, a gravity roll (one handed drum roll) is performed by resting the shaft of the drumstick on the rim of the snare drum, while holding the butt. The hand is moved up and down, causing the head of the stick to strike the drum's head once per stroke and the shaft of the drumstick will strike the rim of the drum on the way down (similar to a seesaw). The spot on the drumstick is different for everyone, as this technique requires considerable forearm precision. It helps to press down fairly hard and also following a slow to fast to slow pattern in order to gain more control. Although its origin is unknown, this technique is believed to have been used by jazz drummers such as Buddy Rich in the past.

Famous Jazz Musicians

Former president of the United States Bill Clinton loves Jazz music, as a young man growing up playing the saxophone was his favorite pastime. He practiced every day and played in jazz ensembles. Each summer, he attended a band camp in the Ozark Mountains. His hard work paid off when he became a top saxophone player at his school and won first chair in the state band's saxophone section. His hard work in school, combined with his musical ability, earned him many academic and music scholarships.

What Is Jazz Drumming?

Jazz drumming is the art of playing percussion (predominantly the drum set, which includes a variety of drums and cymbals) in jazz styles ranging from 1910s-style Dixieland jazz to 1970s-era jazz-rock fusion and 1980s-era latin jazz. The techniques and instrumentation of this type of performance have evolved over several periods, influenced by jazz at large and the individual drummers within it. Stylistically, this aspect of performance was shaped by its starting place, New Orleans, as well as numerous other regions of the world, including other parts of the United States, the Caribbean, and Africa.
